What's happening with Midwest Cycling CX team
Well hello there, it's been a long off season but things are in full swing for the 2013-14 season. We're happy to be back racing with the Trek Cyclocross Collective for our second season.
For our third year now we'll be riding SRAM components. After a couple seasons on the fabulously reliable Red Black we're pumped to be switching it up this season to the all new Force 22 groupset. Lots of talk still about disc brakes but we've got no issues with Avid's Shorty Ultimate brakes so don't expect to see us on discs this season.
We've been putting in the miles in preparation for the new season. Check out Mark in his new rainbow kit courtesy of the fine folks at Capo Cycling Apparel. Mark just returned from a 10 day vacation (training camp :) ) in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Flatwater Twilight CX Series #1
The Nebraska squad was at full strength for the opening round of the Lincoln Industries Flatwater Twilight CX Series. Jay Thomas took control of the race on the opening lap and never looked back. Behind it was teammates Mark Savery and Matt Tillinghast stretching the elastic in the chase group until it snapped and they rode clear for a clean podium sweep with Thomas taking the win, Tillinghast second and Savery Third.
Racing resumes Saturday with the Fontenelle GP in Omaha and the 360 Cup in Lawrence.

Boss Cross
Mark was in action this past weekend at the opening weekend of Kansas City's Boss Cross series. He got off to a flying start building up a 7 second lead on the first lap before THIS (facebook album). A jammed chain left him running a couple 100m to the pits where he grabbed his spare bike. Mark drove hard for the remaining 50 minutes eventually rolling across the line in 3rd behind Bissell pro rider Joe Schmalz and FasCat Coachings Jeff Winkler.

USGP Planet Bike Cup
The national racing scene went off with a bang this past weekend in Sun Prairie, WI just outside Madison and the Trek Midwest CX / Trek Cyclocross Collective riders played a big roll in the action.
Racing kicked off with the men's Masters 45+ event. Starting from the front row, Tom Price played it smart, slowly bringing back second place rider Jeff Wienert who'd escaped early on with eventually winner and Trek CXC rider Mark Legg-Compton. Tom caught Wienert with a few laps remaining but didn't quite have the punch to hold off the first year 45+ racer Wienert in the sprint.
Day 2 saw a much faster course layout and Tom fought it out in the front group. The more open layout didn't quite fall into Tom's strengths and he eventually rolled across the line in 6th place at the tail-end of the lead group.
Tom's results put him in 4th place in the overall standings heading into round three at the Smartwool Cup in Fort Collins, CO.
In the Masters 35+ race, Mark Savery donned the #1 bib number after finishing second in last years overall standings. He was joined by Matt Tillinghast on the second row and Jay Thomas on the third. All poised to make a big impact on the days proceeding.
Mark struck first taking the lead early on lap one, while Matt and Jay worked their way up after a poor start. With a lead group of four riders the decisive moment came with just over a lap remaining when Savery rode the technical hillside strangler stepped climb while the others dismounted and ran. Mark took over the lead and never looked back taking his second USGP victory by just over 4 seconds. Matt and Jay rolled across the line in 7th and 11th place, both recording their best ever USGP finishes.
Day twos race was cancelled due to a bad crash in the opening meters which almost claimed Matt. Not wanting to miss an excellent training opportunity, Mark jumped into the Elite race and put in a stellar performance. Starting from the back row, Savery sliced through the field climbing as high as 23rd place before suffering a flat tire just 3 laps from the finish. He would eventually finish 30th on the day.
With their results, Mark, Matt and Jay head to Fort Collins, CO in 1st, 7th, and 11th in the overall standings. The next race on the calendar is the Gateway Cross Cup where Tom will be racing in the Masters 40/50+ event.

The Greenstreet Twilight CX
The Trek Cyclocross Collective-Midwest Cycling crew opened their account and put money in the bank at the Nebraska season opener in Omaha Wednesday night taking the top two steps on the podium. Mark Savery took over the lead during the first lap when road teammate and Midwest Cycling Community rider Paul Webb slid out in a corner. Savery never looked back and went on to win by almost half a minute. Matt Tillinghast had his work cut out for him as a slow start left him to charge through the field. With one lap to go and sitting in 2nd place, Tillinghast bobbled in the sand and went down allowing John Rokke to close the gap. The two sprinted it out with Matt taking 2nd place by just 0.1 of a second.
Racing resumes this weekend where Tom Price will don his new teams kit at the Dogfish Cross in Herman, MO.

Mark took on the Dakota 5-O
Fourth place overall and victory in the 40-49 class. Congratulations to one time Trek Store Kansas City employee Cameron Chambers on setting a new course record while taking the overall win.

Iowa State Cyclocross Championships
Mark travelled to Altoona (Des Moines), Iowa for their State Cyclocross Championships. After a race long battle with Iowa City man Kevin McConnel, Mark brought home 2nd place. His 16th podium of the season! Read about it at the622realm.
